题号:37 题型:阅读理解题 本题分数:15 内容:
Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary.。This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation -- for example, a family problem, the death
of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition. Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts e.g., friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous, condition.

3.All of the following are the reasons for situational loneliness except___A___. A. moving to a new place B. lack of social contacts C. family problem D. loss of a loved one
4.Although the lonely people are not lack of social contacts, they still experience habitual loneliness because__D____.
A. Their loneliness last too long to change their feeling
B. They feel they should have more social contacts and they are not confident in the popularity
C. They have no idea of how to contact with other people D. They don't know how to improve status quo.
5.According to the passage, which of the following statement is right____A__? A. Loneliness is undoubtedly very dangerous and unhealthy to our lives
B. Loneliness will cause some diseases such as headaches, heat disease and aphasia.
C. The temporary loneliness and situational loneliness can not cause any indisposition to our health

Pigs, fishponds and crops-all housed in tall buildings. This is a vision of industrial farming in the Netherlands(荷兰). In a world concerned about the environment and transport, would it not make sense to concentrate food production next to a harbor and an airport? And since humans can live in tall buildings, why not pigs and fish?
The creative minds behind a government report suggest just this for a site at Rotterdam(鹿行丹) very close to mainland Europe's largest port.
The scale is vast: imagine 10 football fields, six floors of equal area, a total of 500 acres(英亩) stretching skywards. The building, known as Deltapark, visualizes 300000 pigs, 1.2 million chickens, tens of thousands of fish and a giant vegetable growing area all under one roof. The pigs could enjoy more space than on an average pig farm, and end their days in the slaughterhouse downstairs. Space without daylight in the giant building could be used for cultivating mushrooms (蘑菇) which grow well in the dark.
Higher up, greenhouses full of tomatoes and flowers, grown in nutrient solutions collected from elsewhere in the building, would profit from the light, the system is theoretically a complete farming cycle, with one activity feeding another and everything being recycled.
Deltapark is to the run by managers, not farmers. It has nothing to do with agriculture as we now know it, and so far, only exists on paper. But the idea has created a heated debate in the Netherlands and attracted attention abroad.

3.What is the meaning of \"slaughterhouse\" in Line 5, Paragraph 3? A. A house where animals are fed.
B. A house where animals are kept in the daytime.
C. A place where animals stay for the night. D. A place where animals are killed for food.
4.It is supposed in Paragraph 4 that( )

题号:39 题型:阅读理解题 本题分数:15 内容:
During a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body's oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic (交感的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness. How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy (争论). A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal \"American Psychologist\" said that simply sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation (冥想) does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree.
These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation.
The debate goes on, but one thing appears to be clear the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. Once you are aware of all the methods, you can find the one that works best for you.
Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, autoanalysis (自我心理分析) and progressive muscle relaxation. Although these techniques may not, in the end, produce more of a relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals.

I made a pledge to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or bus. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical(圣经)passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives.
Then be wean on to say, \"Love is all act of will. A person can choose to love. \"To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at new yellow sweater (套头衫) looks great in you and said, \"That \"Oh, Tom, you noticed, \"she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.
After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, \"Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.\"We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to cheese love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. In the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
What s the matter? I asked her.
Tom, she said in a voice filled with distress, \"do you know something I don' t?\" \"What do you mean?\"
\"Well'\" that checkup (体检) I had several weeks ago'\" our doctor'\" did he tell you something about me'? Tom, you've been so good to me…am I dying?\" It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.

\"No man is an island,\" wrote the poet John Donne several centuries ago. He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics: the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning, or simply relaxing, we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Our need for human contacts is not merely a practical one; it is deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the (Geneva Convention (日内瓦公约), an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary(孤独)imprisonment for more than thirty days as a cruel form of torture(折磨).
In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expectations about one another's behavior. As a result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of \"belonging.\" They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders.

Just a two-hour trek from Australia's Queens land coast lays the largest coral reef system
in the world. In the very early days, people thought of it as one continual reef running all the way down the Queensland coast. It's only been latterly that we've discovered that it's lots of individual reefs, around about 2,900 separate reef systems which make up the Great Barrier Reef. Mark Geddes is a dive master for a popular Great Barrier Reef water adventure group. \"Being underwater you get a sense of freedom. If you've never dived before to just be able to breathe underwater, all of a sudden you're free,\" said Mark, \"When you're underwater in the Great Barrier Reef it's like nothing else in the Great Barrier Reef it's like nothing else in the world. It's just gorgeous. The colors are fantastic; the fish almost seem as if they're coming up to you. Um you just can't imagine it… It's beautiful.\"
Just exactly how does the reef come by all this coral? Coral is animals while most people think they're plants. They look like plants; they sit and sway in the currents. But, in fact, they're animals. In other words, much of the Great Barrier Reef is an actual living creature.
Coral is basically a jellyfish, which has stopped wandering the oceans, has the ability to pull calcium carbonate out of the surrounding water, lays down a limestone cup, hence forming the large reef systems here. When you look at a coral colony, you're really looking at very thin coral colony over centuries and centuries of coral skeletons.
For being the largest reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef hits our list at number five.
1.Which one can be a good title for this passage?B A. Coral in the Sea
B. The Great Barrier Reef C. The Reef System D. The Forming of Reef
2.What can we assume form the passage?A
A. The Great Barrier Reef is made up by 2,900 linking reefs.
B. If you had no experience of diving, you'd better not take risk to diving in the Great Barrier Reef.
C. Great Barrier Reef is actually formed under the effect of jellyfish. D. The Great Barrier is in fact a colossal rock without life.
3.Which word has the closest meaning with the word \"gorgeous\" in paragraph two?B A. colossal B. miraculous C. extravagant D. beautiful
4.Why could coral make up the Great Barrier Reef?A
A. Because it can decompose carbonate form water whose accumulation forms the reef. B. Because coral that is actually animal but plants can sit and sway in the current. C. Because coral is in fact a jellyfish which is a living creature. D. Because coral can live for several centuries.
5.The major pattern of organization in paragraph 4 involves___A_____ A. order of importance B. causes-effect C. listing details

Wearing contact lenses can give you infections (感染) that can threaten your eyesight-even if you follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions correctly. This finding suggests it is safer to wear disposable lenses that are worn only once.
Antonio Pinna, an Italian scientist, isolated a kind of bacterium(细菌) from a patient's eye that causes food poisoning. The IMA (脱氧核糖酸) of these bacteria matched that of others found in the patient' s lens case-strong evidence that the case was the source of the infection. Eye infections are often the result of people not cleaning their lenses properly. But in this cases Pinna found that the lens cleaning solution failed to kill the bacterium, even when they followed the manufacturer's guidelines exactly. Some doctors say cleaning liquids can't be expected to kill absolutely every species of bug. In many cases they only target certain bacteria. Pinna's finding supports the use of disposable contact lenses that come without any bacteria and never need to be cleaned. However, wearing any foreign body on the eye makes infection more likely. Most eye infections can be cleared up with drugs, but even with treatment there is a risk of damage to the cornea(角膜), which is responsible for about two thirds of your eye's focusing power. The consequences can be serious. Sometimes the patient's vision is seriously weakened.
1.\"Disposable lenses\" in Line 3, Paragraph 1 refers to _____D______. A. glasses that need careful cleaning after use. B. glasses that can be used only once.
C. contact lenses designed to be cleaned carefully after use. D. contact lenses intended to be used once and thrown away.
2.According to Paragraph 1, people who wear contact senses ______A______. A. will have eye infections. B. face the risk of eye infection.
C. should read every word of the instructions. D. should wear disposable contact lenses.
3.Pinna' s finding shows that _______B______.
A. the bacterium found in the patient's eye came from his or her food. B. the bacterium in the patient's eye was different from that in the case. C. lens cleaning solutions can only kill some bacteria.
D. the case of contact should be cleaned thoroughly.
4.Which of the following is Pinna's advice for wearers of contact lenses?B A. Wear lenses that don't need cleaning. B. Clean the lenses as often as possible.
C. Follow every step of the cleaning instructions. D. Find a most effective cleaning solution.
5.Which of the following best expresses the main idea of this passage?A A. Wearing contact lenses is a potential risk to eyesight. B. Proper cleaning of contact lenses can reduce infection. C. Using disposable contact lenses can avoid eye infection.
D. It is safe to clean contact lenses according to the directions.

Situated in an underwater kingdom, Finding Nemo tells tile story of Marlin, a neurotic clown fish who loses his mate and most of their spawn after a fairly intense shark attack in the opening moments of the film. Miraculously, one egg survives; he names it Nemo, honoring its mother's last wish, and vows to protect the little one with his life for the rest of his days.
Cut to several fish years later, and Marlin has become a loving, but overly smothering father; he's deathly afraid to let Nemo leave home, though it's clearly time for the youngster to start \"school.\" Marlin relents, but he finds himself unable to let the child out of his sight for more than a minute without rushing to his side. When he finds his curious, independent offspring venturing out into unsafe water on a dare from his friends, Marlin furiously chides the youngster, who in turn utters that three-word phrase that pierces a parent's heart like none other... \"I hate you.\"
Defiantly, Nemo heads off to make good on his friends' dare, only to inadvertently get himself captured by scuba divers. Horrified, Marlin attempts to rescue Nemo, but the divers blow him back in the wake of their motor boat Though all seems lost, the fearful, almost cowardly Marlin has no intention of shrinking from his promise, so he heads off into the big bad blue to find his son, no matter how improbable his quest may seem.
In his quest, Marlin is joined by a good Samaitan named Dory, a Regal Blue Tang fish with the worst short-term memory and biggest heart in the entire ocean. As the two fish continue on their journey, encountering numerous dangers, Dory's optimism continually forces Marlin to find the courage to take risks and overcome his fears. If you asked people today why they used the telephone to communicate with their friends or why they turned to the television for entertainment, they would look at you as if you were crazy. We don' t think about a telephone or a television or a car as being rare. These things have become such an essential part of life that they are no longer noticed, let alone remarked upon. In the same way, within a decade no one will notice the Worldwide Web(互联网). It will just be there, an essential part of life. It will be a reflex to turn to the Web for shopping, education, entertainment and communication, just as it is natural today to pick up the telephone to talk to someone.
There is an enormous interest in the Web. Yet it is still in its infancy(婴儿期). The technology and the speed of response are leaping forward. This will move more and more people to the Web as part of their everyday lives. Eventually, everyone's business card will have an electronic mail address. Every lawyer, every doctor and every business-from large to small-will be
connected.
To predict that it will take over ten years for these changes to happen is probably pessimistic (悲观的). We usually overestimate what we can do in two years and underestimate what we can do in the. The Web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008.
1.What is implied in Paragraph 1? B
A. Only mad people would ask questions about telephones, TV sets and cars. B. We don't usually ask people why they use the telephone, television and car. C. Today televisions and cars are no longer as important as they used to be. D. In some places, the telephone, television and car are still rare things.
2.According to the text, in ten years' time the Web will( ) A A. have become part of people's everyday life. B. be as cheap as the telephone of today. C. have lost its interest to people. D. no longer be an infant.
3.The word\" reflex\" in Line 2, Paragraph 2 probably means( ) D A. automatic, unthinking act. B. something one is thinking over. C. reflection of other people's opinion. D. turning from the source.
4.Technology for the Web( ) B A. has passed its infancy.
B. is developing at a very rapid rate.
C. has naturally moved more people together. D. is responding to the challenge of the world.
5.Which of the following statements is NOT true? D A. The development of the Web has just started.
B. It will probably take less than ten years for the Web to become common. C. Eventually the Web will be able to link all businesses together.
D. We are usually too optimistic then we talk about what we can do in ten years.

Music which is original is individual and personal. That is to say, it can be identified as belonging to a particular composer. It has particular qualities, or a style, which are not copied from another. If you can recognize the style of a composer, you will probably be able to tell that a certain composition belongs to him or her even though you have never heard it before.
A basket-maker has the skill of weaving and interweaving his materials to create colorful
patterns, and an expert carpenter (木匠) has the skill of joining together different shapes and sizes of wood to make a beautiful piece of furniture. These skills may be referred to as \"workmanship\" (技艺). Similarly, in music a composer organizes his melodies (旋律) and rhythms and combines sounds to create harmony. A composer may be capable of thinking up very good, original tunes, yet if tunes are poorly organized, that is, if the workmanship is poor, the final result will not be up to standard.
Good music expresses feelings in a way that is suitable to those feelings. These may be joy, sorrow, fear, love, anger, or whatever. Bad music, on the other hand, may confuse unrelated feelings, it may not express any important feeling at all, or it may exaggerate some feelings and make them vulgar, that is, cheap and ugly of permanent status while bad music will disappear and be forgotten quickly. In pop music, where the general rule seems to be \"the newer the better\

A. the newer tile music is the harder it can pass B. it is most difficult for music to gain a kind of C. pop music will cease to be enjoyed soon after D. good music needn't pass the test of time
5.This passage is concerned with _________A_________. A. how to compose music B. how to enjoy music C. how to judge music D. how to perform music

To be \"historically minded\" is to see things in relation and in perspective, and to judge tolerantly. We must remember how differently men have thought and acted in different time, we must always keep an open mind, ready to receive and weigh new evidence. If we grasp this idea, We will never think that a historian (历史学家) is someone who can remember dates. That childish idea is like calling a man a statesman (政治家 ) because be can remember the names of voters in his district. A waiter could remember more names and a telephone operator more numbers than the greatest historian.
The true historian is not content to take all his facts from other historians. Today he makes sure his statements are based on sound \"documents \"or \"sources\" which go back to the time of the facts themselves.
But the historian needs always to be in his guard not to be misled by his sources. A document may not be a real one. Its author may be lying on purpose for some reason. He may be so greatly influenced by national, religious, party, or personal backgrounds as to be totally unfair to the other side. If honest, he may be misinformed as to the facts and mistaken in his inferences. Anyone who reads the accounts published in the different countries concerning the causes and results of wars will realize that the historian needs caution and training in handling these sources. The trained historian asks first: \"Did this writer mean to tell the truth?\" and second: \"Was he in a position or frame of mind to tell the truth even if he wants to. Every statement must be patiently weighed and tested and combined with all other available information in order to get at the truth.
1.A\" historically minded\" researcher ___A________. A. always keeps an open mind to history
B. looks at one historical event without relating C. sees things from a single point of view D. refuses to accept new evidence
2.In Paragraph 1 the author means to illustrate ___B__________. A. different men think and act differently
B. the study of history is not merely a matter of remembering dates C. a statesman can remember the names of voters in his district D. a waiter can remember more names than the great historians
3.The true historian should base his statements on ______C________. A. findings of other historians
B. documents created at the present C. his own inferences
D. sound historical materials
4.Which of the following is the topic of Paragraph3?C A. Some historical documents may not be real. B. Some authors may not be honest.
C. Historians should be careful about their sources.
D. historians may be influenced by their own backgrounds.
5.It is emphasized in the last paragraph that _____B________. A. wars are accounted for differently in different countries
B. the historian needs caution and training in dealing with his sources C. some writers may not be telling the truth
D. some writers may not be in a position or frame of mind

Taste is such a subjective matter that we don't usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone's preference is that it's one person's opinion. But because the two big cola companies - Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola are marketed so aggressively, we've wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-Cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting.
We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought they'd have no trouble telling their brand from the other brand.
We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers. Then we fed them four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants' choices with what mere guess-work could have accomplished.
Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19 regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7 to 27 identified all four samples correctly.
While both groups did better than chance would predict, nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Two people got all four samples wrong. Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so fatigue, or taste burn out, was not a factor. Our preference test result suggests that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.

题号:38 题型:阅读理解题 本题分数:15 内容:
I am haunted by the thank-you cards I have not sent, by the ghost of presents past. There is one that should have gone to Aivs for my wedding flowers in 1997 or to Sharon for the birthday cake in 1999----not to mention the 15 that were supposed to go out in May after my daughter Savannah turned 1.
I used to be better about getting them out. I've had parties and little pick-me-ups from friends and I promptly followed up with a card. I miss the one to my friend Avis after hundreds of cards had been sent. After I ran out of my preprinted wedding notes, and after too much time have passed, I was too embarrassed, but I never forgot I owed her one, and part of me had always been afraid that she never did, either.
These days, I've accepted that I have TCI (thank-you card issues). It is a condition marked by obsession, delay and a great deal of guilt about the ritual of thanks. I'm not sure how I got it. I feel that I'm always dashing, dancing, and putting out fires. A part of me longs for the days when a thank-you card at a birthday party for a child too young to write was unnecessary. It is a post-modern lament Judith Martin has heard before. \"I have no sympathy for the idea that an expression of gratitude is a burden on your time,\" says Martin, who writes the nationally syndicated \"Miss Manners\" column.\" And thank-you cards are the form for doing it. It's not enough just to have the sentiment. You have to convey it.\"
When I was young , my mom always stress the ceremony of thanks, and my grandfather often reminded me that people don't have to do anything for you, so you must show gratitude. It seems that I have to address some of my long-overdue cards now.
BCACC
1.In this passage the writer is chiefly concerned with_________ A. The controversy over writing thank-you cards. B. The necessity of writing thank-you cards.
C. The important role thank-you cards play in interpersonal relationships.
D. The difficulty of keeping the ritual of thanks in modern times.
2.Why did the writer failed to send a thank-you note to her friend Avis? A. because she forgot to
B. because she had already sent a lot of cards to Avis before C. because she ran out of her preprinted thank-you notes D. because she was too busy dealing with other issues.
3.The writer felt that her friend Avis -------
A. never forgot that she failed to send a thank-you card.
B. Would miss her wedding occasion because of her shortage of wedding notes. C. Was too angry to get in touch with her again. D. Knew that she had got TCI.
4.What does Judith Martin think of writing thank-you cards? A. it is an old-fashioned ritual. B. It is a burden on one's time
C. It is a necessary ceremony of thanks D. It is chiefly a requirement for adults.
5.According to the passage, what is the writer likely to do soon? A. contact Judith Martin for advice B. send Sharon a birthday cake
C. visit her mom and grandpa to say thanks
D. write to her friends who had sent her something on various occasions

Horrified, Marlin attempts to rescue Nemo, but the divers blow him back in the wake of their motor boat Though all seems lost, the fearful, almost cowardly Marlin has no intention of shrinking from his promise, so he heads off into the big bad blue to
find his son, no matter how improbable his quest may seem.
In doing so, Marlin gains the ability to trust and believe, like Dory, that things will work out in the end. Confronting seabirds, sewer systems, and even man himself, father and son's fateful separation ends in triumph. And the once-fearful Marlin becomes a true hero in the eyes of his son, and the entire ocean.

In the thinking of the Greek philosophers, cause and effect were quite distinct. It would have been unthinkable for the effect to turn round and act upon the cause. One thing acts upon another: the footballer kicks the ball; the boiling water boils the egg; the bomb destroys the building.
As soon as we leave the world of physical action and consider people, the idea of simple cause and effect is not enough. Two people are arguing: they each have an effect on the other. A boy gives his girlfriend a present. She is affected by his kindness and he by her delight and appreciation. In the biological world interaction is much more common than one-way action. Sometimes the interaction is a mutual exchange of action and effect. All feedback(反馈) situations involve interaction.
Interaction suggests communication. Communication channels are rarely one way. Wherever there is communication there is likely to be interaction.
Sometimes it is important to know the extent of the interaction. For example, when two drugs are given to a patient it is important to know whether they are going to interact. They could interact in three ways: the second drug could neutralize or reduce the effectiveness of the first; the second drug could exaggerate the effect of the first; the two drugs' might together produce a totally new effect. Each of these processes can happen the other way round with the first drug affecting the second. Even outside medicine, any two actions that might separately have a pure effect, when acting together, might produce unexpected consequences.
1.The Greek philosophers ( D)
A. believed that cause and effect could act on one another. B. did not consider cause and effect as different.
C. thought that cause and effect wire interchangeable. D. did not think that cause and effect could interact.
2.We learn from Paragraph 2 that, in the biological world,( B) A. cause and effect are too complicated to define.
B. interaction is involved whenever response is needed.
C. boys and girls affect each other. D. it takes two to make a quarrel.
3.According to Paragraph 3, communication( A) A. affects interaction. B. sustains interaction. C. indicates interaction. D. involves little interaction.
4.\"The other way round\" as used in Line 6, Paragraph 4 probably means( B) A. in another way. B. in the opposite way. C. in a different way. D. in an indirect way.
5.It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that(A )
A. the range of interaction between any two actions can be unimaginable. B. the possibility of three drugs interacting with one another is rather slight. C. two drugs taken separately are more effective than they are taken together. D. two drugs taken together are more effective than they are taken separately.

A physical window is a gap in a wall through which you can look out. Imagine you are trying to shoot an arrow at a tree in the garden. The wall in front of you is a movable wall with a small window in it. You have to wait until you can see the tree through the window and then shoot. If you miss the opportunity you have to wait until the window comes by again. The \"window\" exists when everything is in order for the action you want to take.
Toy manufactures have to have their new products ready for the toy fairs in January and February when buyers from the big stores place their orders. If they miss this opportunity they have to wait a whole year and miss the Christmas trade of that year. The launch window for a new toy product is quite small.
The time gap between Europe and the United States is five to six hours. Since people on each side of the Atlantic work roughly the same office hours, the communication window might be quite small. When an American financier gets to his office it is already two o' clock in the afternoon in Europe. If the European leaves his office at five o' clock there is only a three-hour communication window.
Governments are often conscious that a decision may only be possible at a certain stage in the economic cycle. There is a window. If the same decision is made earlier it will be ineffective, if it is made later it may be dangerous. A window is an opportunity when the conditions are suitable for the intended action. This opportunity lasts for only a limited time.
1.A \"physical window \"is ____________D
A. an opening in a wall for looking through B. a hole in a wall that can be moved. C. a frame made of a special material.
D. an opportunity for the action you want to take.
2.The word \"window\" in the last sentence of Paragraph 1 means ____________B A. a short period of time suitable for shooting off arrows. B. a short period of time available for a particular activity. C. an opening in a wall to let in air and light. D. a hole made in a wall for a special purpose.
3.The launch window for a new product is _______________C A. just a few says. B. a very small hole. C. about two months. D. a very small space.
4.There might be only a three-hour communication window between an American financier and a European. This is because _________C
A. the American financier has to fly to his office in Europe B. the American financier works from 2pm to 5pm C. there is a 5-hour difference between Europe and D. the European leaves his office too early.

Even though the majority of Americans would find it hard to imagine what life could be like without a car, some have begun to realize that the automobile is a mixed blessing. Traffic
accidents are increasing 1 , and large cities are 2 by too many automobiles. Worst of all, perhaps, 3 the air pollution caused 4 the internal-combustion (内燃机) engine. Every car engine bums 5 gallons of fuel each year and pumps gases 6 the air. These gases are one 7 of the
smog that hangs over large cities. Some of these gases are 8 and dangerous 9 health, especially for someone with a weak heart or a respiratory disease. One answer 10 the problem of air pollution is 11 a car that does not pollute. That's 12 several major automobile manufacturers are trying to do. But building a clean car is 13 said than done. 14 , progress has been slow. 15 solution is to eliminate car fumes (烟) altogether by 16 the internal-combustion engine. Inventors are now working on turbine-powered cars, 17 on cars powered by
steam and electricity. 18 most of us won't be driving cars run on batteries or 19 water for a while yet. Many auto makers believe that it will take years 20 practical models that are powered by electricity or steam.

题号:37 题型:阅读理解题 本题分数:15 内容:
Life on earth depends on water, and there is no substitute for it. The current assumption is that our basic needs for water-whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish-will always have to be met. Given that premise, there are two basic routes we can go: more equitable access to water or more drastic engineering solutions.
Looking at the engineering solution first, a lot of my research concentrates on what happens to wetlands when you build dams in river basins, particularly in Africa. The ecology of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal regime of the river-the pulse of the water. And the fact is that if you build a dam, you generally wreck the downstream ecology. In the past, such problems have been hidden by a dearth of information. But in the next century, governments will have no excuse for their blissful ignorance.
The engineers' ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability too. Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing and less floodplain agriculture-none of which were anticipated.
The challenge for the next century is to find new means of controlling water. Although GM technology will allow us to breed better dry-land crops, there is no market incentive for companies to develop crops suitable for the micro-climates of the Sahel and elsewhere in Africa. Who is going to pay for research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World?
This brings us to the key issue in any discussion of water: money. To talk about a water crisis glosses over intractable problems such as poverty. In the next century every household in Britain will have a water meter, and we will pay for what we use just as we do for gas or electricity. But consider the problems of water supply in Mexico City or Delhi. If you're rich, you drink mineral water and may even have a swimming-pool-yet millions in such cities can't get safe drinking water. It is a water crisis for the poor.
1.According to the passage which of the following statements is right?B
A. In order to meet the needs for eater, more drastic engineering solutions should be employed
B. The author implies the GM technology will become the widely used means to solute water crisis in the next century.
C. In the past, due to the shortage of information about dams, many district's downstream ecology have been ruined
D. Because the water resource is limited, scientists have been searching for the new substitutes for it
2.What does the word \"dearth\" mean in the second paragraph?C A. misunderstanding B. neglect C. lack D. dozen
3.The author implies that the building of dams in Africa brings about the following unanticipated problems except_________A A. fewer fish B. less grazing
C. less floodplain Agriculture
D. less wetland in the downstream
4.According to the author, which of the following is a more feasible means to ameliorate water crisis? D
A. Invention more money to stimulate the research on finding new ways to control water B. Installment water meter in the households to spare water resources. C. Limitation the using of the wealthy persons
D. Full employment of the genetically-modified technology
5.The author implies that at present the source of the water crises in the world is__________ B A. new technologies
B. government's measures C. investment
D. engineers' ability

Most Americans would have a difficult time telling you, specifically, what the values are which Americans live by. They have never given the matter any thought.
Over the years I have introduced thousands of international visitors to life in the United States. This has caused me to try to look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors. I am confident that the values listed in this booklet describe most (but not all) Americans, and that understanding these values can help you, the international visitor, understand Americans.
It is my belief that if foreign visitors really understand how deeply these 13 values are ingrained in Americans, they will then be able to understand 95 % of American actions-actions which might otherwise appear strange, confusing, or \"unbelievable\" when evaluated from the perspective of the foreigner's own society and its values.
The different behaviors of a people or a culture make sense only when seen through the basic beliefs, assumptions and values of that particular group. When you encounter an action, or hear a statement in the United States which surprises you, try to see it as an expression of one or more of the values listed in this booklet.
1.Can an ordinary American tell you his/her value system? A. yes, because this is something an American lives by. B. No, because everyone will have his/her own system. C. No, because he/she has never thought about it.
D. Yes, because values are something often in their thought.
2.The author lists 13 values in his booklet to ___________. A. invite foreigners to visit America.
B. look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors. C. describe the confusing actions of most Americans. D. help international visitors understand Americans.
3.The word \"ingrained\" in Line 2 Paragraph 3 most probably means _________. A. rooted in the minds. B. found in the grains. C. planted for food. D. prepared with grain.
4.Visitors sometimes find Americans behave in a strange, confusing or unbelievable way, probably because ___________.
A. Americans are hard to understand.
B. Americans have values which are entirely different from their own. C. they view Americans according to the values in their own society.
D. it is difficult to understand any people when you first encounter them.
5.How can you understand a surprising behavior or statement of an American when you visit the United States?
A. By linking it to the basic beliefs, assumptions and values of the Americans.
B. By comparing it with the values of yourself and your country. C. By expressing one or more of the values in this booklet.
D. By looking at the particular group of people who behave or speak that way.

How cold is cold? It all depends on who is talking. To us ordinary people nothing in the world my be so mid as falling through the ice on a frozen lade, or huddling (卷缩)on a windswept mountain hoping to be rescued in the dead of winter. Some may even think they are freezing to death when rushing under an ice-cold shower just out of a warm bed. Indeed, we all know what cold means. Arctic(北极) explorers would laugh at such ideas. Down in the Antarctic(南极), where scientists of many nations spend very dark months living on a sheet of ice two miles thick, the temperature spends most of its time at 50 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero, often with hundred-mile winds and heavy snowstorms. This is the cold that is cold, to them.
Space people have still another still another standard. The coldest place in which a person can live and survive is some 400 degrees hotter than space itself. However, the coldest place in earth-colder even than space is inside a machine called a cryostat(低温保持器). Here, scientists and engineers in thousands of laboratories and factories in many parts of the world regularly make cold that turns the South Pole's worst into a pleasant summer day. They are inching toward such cold that there is no temperature at all-down a frozen valley that leads to Absolute Zero, 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit below our zero of a cold winter's day.
1.According to the passage, nothing is so cold to an ordinary person as ____________. A. waiting for death on top of a mountain in winter.
B. being trapped in a mountain swept by wind in severe winter C. taking a cold shower right out of bed. D. slipping on a frozen lake.
2.Which of the following statements is true?
A. Arctic explorers think it is fun to live on ice for months.
B. To Arctic explorers, -60 with high winds and heavy snow is coldest C. The Antarctic has-50 or -60weather 'all the year round.
D. To Antarctic explorers, -60 with winds and heavy snow is coldest
3.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that space is probably ___________. A. about-400 B. about-350 C. about-450 D. about-500
4.From the passage we learn that ___________.
A. it is possible that some scientists working in the Arctic also work in the Antarctic.
B. the South Pole' s coldest temperature is still very hot compared with the cold made in a cryostat.
C. a cryostat can be used to change a very low temperature into a pleasant summer day. D. the Arctic is covered by an unbroken sheet of ice several miles in thickness.
5.\"Absolute Zero\" is ____________. A. no temperature at all. B. as cold as space C. an ice-cold valley

During a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body's oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic (交感
的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness.
How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy (争
论). A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal \"American Psychologist\" said that simply sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation (冥
想) does.
Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, autoanalysis (自我心理分
析) and progressive muscle relaxation. Although these techniques may not, in the end, produce more of a relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals. 新视野一ccdab
Anyone who earns a living must claim that his efforts have added value to someone else or service. A corner shop has added the value of convenience, choice and short 1raveling distance. A supermarket would claim to have added a bigger choice, which allow for lower pricing.
The iron ore that is mined in Western Australia could he exported directly to Japan. The miners would charge for the value of owning the ore and for the added value of getting it out of the ground. If the ore is converted into steel before shipment then there is the added value of this conversion. If the steel is foxed into wires and sheets then there is the added value of this shaping. If the steel is made into motorcars and refrigerators then there is even more added value. The price at which the final product is send to Japan would reflect the value that had been added in Australia rather than in Japan. It could happen, of course, that the Japanese would not be interested in paying for this value added in Australia since it would mean that their own pictures of refrigerators or cars would be put out of business.
There are times when a purchaser does not want the added value. A young couple might prefer to buy unpainted furniture and paint it themselves. The Japanese, in the example above, might prefer to do their own processing. What does some things seem unfair is that the person who adds value somewhere downstream can make more profit than the original producer(as may happen in the case of farmers and agricultural produce). Transport is an added value which many people ignore; the fact that something you want is available to you in a shop is a value added to its intrinsic (内在的) value.
